PRT Career Services

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Missouri takes great strides in providing professional development opportunities to its students on and off-campus. With the revamping of PRT 1011 and PRT 3189 classes, the department has been able to encourage students to participate in resume reviews, mock interviews, Internship and Employer panels as well as arrange day trips to Kansas City and St. Louis for networking opportunities with several professional organizations.

In Fall 2013, several PRT students who had interned in various fields from professional sporting organizations, collegiate athletics and national parks participated in the CAFNR Internship Fair. The Internship fair is an opportunity for CAFNR students to share their experiences and thoughts about their Internship with their peers, from how they found their internship, to applying for the internship process as well as the responsibilities of their internship are shared by the participating students with their peers.

In Spring 2014, the department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism had organized a PRT Internship panel. The panel which was made up of PRT graduate student Courtney Schultz and PRT seniors Kaylynn Howard and Jennifer Winston shared their experiences working at the Mizzou Recreation Center, Mt. Rushmore National Park and Columbia Parks, Recreation and Tourism. PRT students Samuel Jones and Clark Williams participated in the panel via a Skype session and talked about their experiences with the Kansas City Sports Commission and the Major League Baseball. Also, PRT Alum Katie Stanley returning from Guantanamo Bay stopped by to talk about her career and internship experience with MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation).

In Fall 2013 about 57 students and in Spring 2014 about 121 students from PRT 3189 (Pre-Internship) class students underwent a Mock Interview with a current professional from the Parks, Recreation and Tourism field. The Interviews were held in a number of formats from in-person, phone to Skype. Several employers from St. Charles Parks and Recreation, Kansas City T-Bones, Omaha Storm Chasers, NW Arkansas Naturals, Missouri State Parks, Kansas City Sports Commission and others participated.

The department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism in Fall 2013 arranged a PRT Employer Panel. The panelists for the employer panel was made of professionals from all different areas of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Brian Budzinski the proprietor for Kansas City Soccer Dome and Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), Adam Samson the Sports Information Director at Stephens College. Mike Halloran, Director of Athletic Facilities at Missouri Western State University, Erika Swilley, Director of Community Relations and Operations at Chicago Sky, James Kent, Parks Maintenance Supervisor with St. Charles Parks and Recreation and John Lamod, Mizzou Hockey Head Coach participated in this event. As part of the employer panel not only did the students get to ask questions to these employers, but also as part of a networking session hosted at the end of the panel students had a one-on-one personal discussion with all those present for the employer panel.

In Spring 2014, Parks, Recreation and Tourism department invited veteran sports and entertainment sales and marketing executive Bob Burris, and current managing partner for the Burris Group LLC to CAFNR Professor for a day event. Bob has spent the last 40 years of his life working in the sport sales and marketing area selling sponsorships and tapping new opportunities for revenue. He is also the author of the book "How to Sell Sponsorships, Tickets & Popcorn".

Resume Review

Every Fall and Spring semester, the Parks, Recreation and Tourism department along with its colleagues in CAFNR Career Services participate in Resume review. PRT 1011, (Academic and Career Orientation class) which is primarily made up of incoming freshman in the department are encouraged to attend this session.

The department also arranges for a one-on-one resume review for PRT 3189 (Pre-Internship class) with PRT Internship Coordinators and Academic Advisors every Fall and Spring semester. Students are encouraged to make a 15 minute appointment for this session. Updated resumes are eventually uploaded on HireMizzouTigers.com for students seeking Internship or full-time opportunities in their field.

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism department currently as part of its core classes offers two individual courses which focuses on professional development. PRT 1011 (Academic and Career Orientation class) focusses on helping the incoming freshman and transfer students explore opportunities in the field and become more familiar about them, while PRT 3189 (Pre-Internship class) helps senior students in the department to find internship opportunities in the field and polish skills which would be required in securing an opportunity.

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism department in its effort to help its students network and develop relationships with professional sporting organizations in Kansas City and St. Louis areas, organized day long trips to St. Louis and Kansas City areas in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters.

In Fall 2013, PRT students visited the St. Louis Rams Sports and Entertainment Career Fair at the Edwards Jones Dome and met with professionals from St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Ambush, St. Louis Attack, SLU and Mizzou Athletics among others. As part of the Career fair, the students also got an opportunity to hear from several of the front office staff and administrators at the St. Louis Rams about their experiences and background in the field.

In Spring 2014, the PRT department organized a Kansas City Sport Excursion which led to the attending the KC Royals Career Fair as well as a meet and greet with the Royals Executives. At the KC Royals Career Fair, students met with professionals from KC Chiefs, KC Royals, KC T-Bones, KC Sports Commission, Sporting KC, Wichita Thunder, Missouri Comets and others. The PRT group also toured the Arrowhead Stadium and met with officials from KC Chiefs, as well as the KC T-Bones and got to ask questions and hear about personal experiences from the professionals working in the field.

In Spring 2014, several Parks, Recreation and Tourism undergraduate and graduate students attended the annual Missouri Park & Recreation Association conference held at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Mo. The PRT students helped with room arrangements as well as introducing panelists, while some graduate students also presented in panel discussions. Several PRT students attending this conference were scholarship recipients for the 2014 MPRA scholarship.
