Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Program Admissions

For Prospective Graduate Students

Thank you very much for your interest in the MU soil, environmental and atmospheric sciences graduate program. This site provides information concerning application requirements and procedures for admission into graduate programs in atmospheric science, environmental science and soil science.

Application Requirements

Applicants for the atmospheric science program should have completed courses in integral calculus and one year of college physics in their undergraduate program.

Applicants for the environmental science program should have completed courses in general and organic chemistry, introductory biology, calculus, geology, physics, and ecology.

Applicants for the soil science program should have completed courses in general and organic chemistry, calculus, geology and physics.

Inadequacies in courses must be remedied through additional course work immediately after admission and courses should be selected in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Minimum requirements for acceptance into the graduate program are:

  • Completion of a B.S. degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 hours of coursework.
  • Minimum GRE score: Verbal + Quantitative=1100, Analytical=3.5.
  • Minimum TOEFL score: 530/197/71 (paper/computer/Internet).

No set deadlines for receipt of graduate applications have been established but adequate time is needed prior to the start of the academic semester to allow for processing and evaluation of applications.

It is encouraged that applicants contact individual faculty that are conducting research in the applicant's area of interest in order to learn more about their research and possible opportunities for research assistantships.  A listing of some current graduate research assistantships in the Department of Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences (SEAS) is also available on the SEAS graduate program. Each faculty member has a profile and contact information page on the SEAS website.

Application Procedures

Starting in 2010, all applications and supporting application materials for graduate admission into the SEAS Department must be submitted to the Graduate School using the Apply Yourself online application system.

Required application materials to be sent to the Graduate School:

  • A letter of self-evaluation and professional goals.
  • Official transcripts of all course work.
  • Three letters of reference.
  • Official GRE scores.
  • Official scores from TOEFL or another approved test of English proficiency is required from international applicants.

Doctoral Degree

A student may be accepted for advisement in the Ph.D. program after completion of an M.S. degree or its equivalent. A waiver of the M.S. degree requirement may be made by the candidate's doctoral program committee.
